Jeanne Shaheen was the first woman in U.S. history to be elected both governor and U.S. senator. She served three terms as New Hampshire's governor before winning her Senate seat in 2008. In 2023, she announced she would not seek re-election in 2026, creating a competitive open-seat race in one of the most closely contested states in the nation.
