Gretchen Whitmer is Michigan's two-term Democratic governor, elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2022. Known for her "Fix the Damn Roads" campaign slogan and her stewardship of Michigan through COVID-19 (during which she became a target of a domestic terrorism kidnapping plot), she is term-limited in 2026. She is considered a national figure in the Democratic Party and a potential future presidential contender, and her exit creates a wide-open Michigan gubernatorial race.
