Gavin Newsom

Governor (Term-Limited)

CA Governor

Gavin Newsom is California's two-term governor and one of the most prominent Democrats in the country, frequently mentioned as a future presidential contender. A former Mayor of San Francisco and California Lieutenant Governor, he won the governorship in 2018 and survived a recall election in 2021 with 62% voting to keep him. He is constitutionally term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026. Known for his aggressive positioning against Republican-led states on climate, abortion, and gun control, Newsom has used California as a laboratory for progressive policy and a platform for national ambitions.

Climate & Clean Energy

Lead the most aggressive climate agenda of any U.S. state; phase out fossil fuels

  • Signed executive order phasing out new gasoline-powered vehicle sales by 2035
  • Set California's goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045
  • Negotiated California's continued participation in international climate agreements independent of federal policy
  • Backed $54 billion climate package including wildfire prevention and clean energy investment

Reproductive Rights

Make California a national sanctuary for reproductive healthcare

  • Signed constitutional amendment enshrining abortion rights in California's constitution
  • Issued orders protecting California abortion providers from out-of-state prosecution
  • Backed legislation allowing out-of-state patients to access abortion in California

Gun Safety

Enact the strictest gun laws in the nation; challenge other states' lax laws in court

  • Signed legislation creating a California private right of action to sue gun manufacturers (modeled on Texas's abortion enforcement law)
  • Pushed for a constitutional amendment establishing federal gun control standards
  • Signed assault weapons restrictions and high-capacity magazine bans
