Joseph J. Carraro, an Independent, is a candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico in 2026, with a statement of candidacy filed with the FEC in June 2026. He served in the New Mexico State Senate from 1985 to 2009, representing District 26 (1985–1989) and District 23 (1993–2009), and left the Republican Party to register as an Independent in 2008. He previously ran as a Republican in the 2006 U.S. Senate primary, finishing second with about 31% of the vote. Born in New York City in 1944, Carraro earned degrees from the University of New Mexico and worked as a financial analyst and stockbroker at Merrill Lynch from 1970 to 1974.
