Toby Smith filed with the Federal Election Commission as a candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico in the 2026 cycle, listing his party as "Jewish/Christian National" (FEC candidate ID S6NM01137). According to FEC filings reviewed by the Santa Fe New Mexican, the address he listed — 3828 Piermont Drive NE in Albuquerque — was the home of the fictional character Walter White from Breaking Bad, and a real estate agent for the property confirmed no one named Toby Smith lived there. The same investigation found that a phone number on the filing was not in service, that Smith reported no campaign funds on hand, and that the Jewish/Christian National Party appeared to have no prior independent existence beyond a 2015 Charlotte Observer report of a similarly phantom filing. "Smith" was the only challenger in the race against Democratic incumbent Ben Ray Luján at the time of reporting.
