Melisa López Franzen is an attorney and a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party. She represented District 49 — covering southwest Twin Cities suburbs including Edina, Eden Prairie, Bloomington, and Minnetonka — in the Minnesota Senate, and served as the chamber's DFL minority leader from 2021 to 2023. Before entering the race, she was executive director of government and community relations at the University of Minnesota. In March 2025, she announced a bid for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Tina Smith in the 2026 election.
