Joseph 'Joe' Tate is a Democrat from Detroit who has served in the Michigan House of Representatives since 2019 and was the chamber's 78th Speaker from 2023 to 2025. Before politics, Tate served as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer, with two deployments in Afghanistan, and played professional football as an offensive lineman. In 2025 he launched a campaign for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat but later suspended it and instead sought re-election to the state House.
