Abdul El-Sayed is an epidemiologist and physician who previously served as health officer and executive director of the Detroit Health Department from 2015 to 2017 and later as director of the Wayne County Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services from 2023 to 2025. He was a Democratic candidate for governor of Michigan in 2018, receiving about 30% of the primary vote in a loss to Gretchen Whitmer. In April 2025, El-Sayed announced his campaign for the Democratic nomination in Michigan's 2026 U.S. Senate election, seeking the seat being vacated by incumbent Gary Peters. As of the Federal Election Commission's most recent filing, his campaign committee has reported total receipts of $7,646,727.83.
