Nirav Shah is a physician and attorney running as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine in 2026 (FEC ID S6ME00449). He holds medical and law degrees from the University of Chicago and served as director of the Illinois Department of Public Health from 2015 to 2019 before being appointed director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, where he became a visible figure during the COVID-19 pandemic. He left the Maine CDC in 2023 to become Principal Deputy Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, stepping down in 2025. In 2026 he ran unsuccessfully in the Democratic primary for Maine governor and later entered the U.S. Senate race.
