Daniel C. Smeriglio, a Republican and former police officer, filed as a challenger for the U.S. Senate in Maine in the 2026 cycle, arguing that longtime incumbent Susan Collins votes with Senate Democrats too often. He did not qualify for the June 9, 2026 Republican primary ballot, and Susan Collins proceeded as the only Republican on the primary ballot before advancing to the general election. His principal campaign committee, Daniel Smeriglio for Senate, was registered in Frenchville, Maine, and his statement of candidacy was filed with the FEC on February 14, 2025.
