Derek Dooley, a Republican, ran for the U.S. Senate seat from Georgia in the 2026 election, entering the race on August 4, 2025, as a first-time candidate for public office. He is a former college and professional football coach who served as head coach at Louisiana Tech University and the University of Tennessee and held assistant coaching positions in the National Football League, and he also practiced law in Atlanta after earning a law degree from the University of Georgia. He is the son of Vince Dooley, a former University of Georgia football coach. Dooley advanced to a Republican primary runoff after no candidate won a majority in the May 19, 2026 primary, then lost the June 16, 2026 runoff to Mike Collins, who received 55.5% of the vote and went on to face Democratic incumbent Jon Ossoff in November.
