Thomas Perriello, a Democrat, is running for Virginia's 5th congressional district in 2026 after previously representing the same seat from 2009 to 2011, when he defeated incumbent Virgil Goode and was later defeated by Robert Hurt. He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended Yale College and Yale Law School, and lives outside Charlottesville. He has served as U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan (2024-2025), Special Envoy for the African Great Lakes (2015-2016), and as executive director of U.S. Programs at the Open Society Foundations. He is a candidate in the August 4, 2026 Democratic primary for the 5th district.
