Karen Ortiz is an Independent candidate for New York's 12th Congressional District in 2026, her first run for elected office. She was born in Manhattan and graduated from Columbia College and Fordham Law School. Her legal career began with the NYC Parks Department and includes service as an administrative judge at the EEOC's New York District Office, as a judge for the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, and roughly eight years of disability litigation on behalf of the Social Security Administration. She was fired from the EEOC after she objected to a directive to pause discrimination investigations involving transgender people.
