John Joseph Cavanaugh Jr. is an Omaha-based attorney and Democratic state senator representing Nebraska's 9th district, first elected in 2020 and re-elected in 2024. He previously worked as a Douglas County assistant public defender and holds a B.A. from the Catholic University of America and a J.D. from Vermont Law School. In June 2025 he announced a campaign for Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District, the seat his late father, former U.S. Rep. John J. Cavanaugh III, held from 1977 to 1981.
