Abughazaleh, a former video producer at Media Matters for America who built a social media following covering Fox News, announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination in Illinois's 9th Congressional District in March 2025. In the March 17, 2026 Democratic primary to succeed retiring Rep. Jan Schakowsky, she placed second behind Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss by roughly four percentage points, according to The Associated Press.
