Wanda James is a member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents representing District 1, a position she has held since January 2023 with a term ending in 2029. A first-generation graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1986 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1991, becoming the first Black woman commissioned through CU's Naval ROTC program. She is a business owner; in 2009, she and her husband became the first African Americans to own a cannabis company in America. James was the 2026 Democratic candidate for Colorado's 1st Congressional District U.S. House seat, losing the Democratic primary on June 30, 2026.
