Born in Thomaston, Georgia, she holds a bachelor's degree in Health and Exercise Science from Georgia Southern University (1996) and a master's in education from Troy State University (2000), and worked in sports medicine in Atlanta with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory Sports Medicine. She subsequently became a gun-violence-prevention activist in Florida, serving as Florida State Lead for Moms Demand Action for Gunsense by 2016, and lives in Pensacola.
