Bernie Sanders is serving his fourth term in the U.S. Senate from Vermont after winning re-election in 2024. Born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964 and moved to Vermont, where he worked as a carpenter and journalist. He served as mayor of Burlington from 1981 to 1989, then represented Vermont at-large in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007 before his election to the Senate.
