Alex Padilla is a United States Senator from California, a Democrat, and the incumbent in this race. Born in Los Angeles to immigrants from Mexico and a graduate of San Fernando High School, he earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994. He served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1999 to 2006, including as Council President from 2001; in the California State Senate from 2006 to 2014; and as California Secretary of State from 2015 to 2021, the first Latino to hold the office. Governor Gavin Newsom appointed him to the U.S. Senate in January 2021 to fill the vacancy created by Kamala Harris's election as Vice President, and voters elected him to a full term in November 2022.
