Abigail Spanberger is a Democrat serving as governor of Virginia, sworn in on January 17, 2026 as the first woman to hold the office. She previously represented Virginia's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2019 to 2025. Before entering politics, Spanberger worked as an operations officer at the CIA and earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. In the 2025 election she defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears.
